The STATCOM is the most advanced evolution to the reactive power compensation FACTS devices.Due to the STATCOM’s faster response, wide operating range, low harmonic content and small footprint it is becoming the most desirable solution to the industry. Transnet, ESKOM Transmission’s client was embarking on increasing their capacity and operations on their Sishen-Saldhana Iron Ore Railway System. From the System studies it was shown that this would impact the Voltage Unbalance, thus negatively affecting the Stability and Power Quality of the region. MegaHVT was awarded the “TURNKEY” project in 2012 to provide a Complete STATCOM Solution [+45MVar] that would be connected to the ESKOM Transmission 275kV bus at Garona Substation. MegaHVT making use of our new technology partner RXPE [Rongxin Power Electronic] successfully completed this project in record time. MegaHVT ran the project, the first in Africa of this magnitude, from the civil and electrical design stage, through procurement, to Importing, Factory Acceptance Testing, Construction and Installation to final Hot Commissioning.
